Skinvestment

Skincare is an essential part of our overall health and well-being. However, if you are not investing in proper skincare products and treatments, you could potentially be doing more harm than good in the long run. A well rounded routine takes time, energy, consistency and knowledge. Making the decision to invest in seeing a professional that can assess your skin and guide you in choosing the right regimen is most often necessary to achieve your skin goals. A professional will have the knowledge and experience needed to understand and cater to all different skin types. Although building a routine specific to you may still take time, you’ll skip a lot of the trial and error you’re likely to experience when blindly trying trendy products and taking skincare advice from social media influencers. Skincare professionals often stay up to date on the latest skincare trends and hot products and can encourage you to keep using them or steer you towards something more beneficial.

Your skin health can be transformed by high-quality products. High-end products may not be as inexpensive and widely available as the standard drugstore products, but the extra effort and money spent is worth it for several reasons. Ingredient lists alone will typically show a higher concentration of active ingredients while those in standard products tend to be less or of lesser quality. The way a product is formulated determines how it will penetrate into the skin, and how effective it will be. High-end or medical grade products typically have a well known reputation thanks to the technology used while formulating and the science backed studies

performed to prove efficacy. Premium brands tend to heavily invest in research development for their products, which is not the case for many lower end brands. Packaging can be another tell-tale sign of the product’s quality. How a product is packaged directly affects the formulation’s stability. High-end brands not only focus on packaging for proper shelf life, they typically make sure to give them a luxurious look and feel that consumers appreciate. However, just because you buy your creams and serums in a fancy skincare boutique or medspa doesn’t mean that it is correct for your specific needs. Sometimes, drugstore products may even be beneficial to add into your skincare routine. However this is very dependent on the brand and should be talked about with a professional that is familiar with the product or ingredients. That’s why seeking the advice and assessment from a professional is worth the investment, as they can help to put you on the correct path towards your skin goals.

Another area in the realm of skincare where it can be tempting to cut costs is by attempting to do professional treatments at home. There are many tools readily available for the average consumer to buy that claim to be comparable to a professional device. More often than not these tools cause more harm than good, or they do absolutely nothing for the health of your skin. One example is the at home face shavers that market themselves to be like a professional dermaplaning service. While they may remove hair off your face, they are creating micro-cuts all

along your skin at the same time. Professional dermaplane blades are medical-grade, sharper and precise. Another good example would be the at home derma-roller tools that claim to boost collagen production the way a microneedling treatment would. In reality, these rolling needles drag and create superficial tears in the uppermost part of the skin, as the needles don’t reach the depth of a microneedling device to begin with. Unlike microneedling pens that use disposable heads, these use the same needles every time and if not properly sterilized can lead to infection. These tools that you can buy without a license are not effective the way in office treatments are and can often lead to adverse reactions and negative effects. The damage caused will then need to be addressed with a more expensive professional treatment. When in doubt about what you should be doing at home, trust your skincare professional for advice and not the misleading ads presented in stores or on social media. A professional treatment will most likely always be the clear winner in comparison, but having an understanding of why will help you to make the right choices throughout your skincare journey.

Investing your time and energy into being consistent in your routine is also important. This includes setting aside time daily/weekly for your at home skincare regimen, and setting aside time monthly to get professional treatments done. It can also mean investing your time into researching and knowing your own skin type. This can be done by receiving the help from a professional and by taking the time to recognize what does and doesn’t affect your skin. Healthy skin starts from within, and knowing where your own imbalances lie could mean taking time to curate a healthy diet and lifestyle for your skin. For instance, that can mean incorporating healthier, skin-loving foods or eliminating acne triggering foods from your diet. It could also include choosing to direct your time away from activities like drinking and smoking that may be accelerating your skin’s aging. Consistency, education and dedication to the long term health of your skin in all areas guarantees less time and money spent towards corrective treatments later on.

Professional treatments, correct product choices, healthy living practices and staying consistent may seem expensive and time consuming but will always be worth it in the long run. It can seem overwhelming to know where to start, so taking the time to research and choose a qualified and trusted skincare professional is a great first step. Trends and treatments in the skincare industry are forever evolving and misinformation is constantly spread by those who aren’t properly educated. Always remember that your skin is an investment and you need to choose what you buy into wisely!
